Folk art in India is an art tradition which is ancient and handed down as a family heritage. Folk art is an invocation of simple people to their Gods and Goddesses, beliefs and myths. They welcome guests, honour their traditions, bring out the beauty of nature, birds and animals through their art.
From the mud walls the traditional folk art is recreated on paper and has become a feature as a piece of art in contemporary modern homes. Spirited and spontaneous folk art is the art of the earth and the expression of simple people and their beliefs.
The media used in folk art originally vegetable and mineral dyes with bright colours. Contemporary folk artists however, use oil, acrylic and water colour, which are available to them today.
Paintings, sculptures, puppets, jewellery and crafts from Warli, Bastar, Hazaribagh, Assam, Pithora, Mithila, Bengal and Kashi reflect the age-old folk tradition of India.
